Upsetting & Wall Thickening Process for Tubing Pup Joints

The end-thickening (upsetting) process involves heating the tubing end and feeding it into a special upsetting machine. During this process, plastic deformation occurs at the end of the pipe — the inner diameter remains unchanged, while the outer wall thickens and the effective length of the thickened section increases. This procedure enhances the structural integrity of the pipe ends.

This external upsetting process is a combination of upsetting, expanding, and extruding, and is essential to:

• Increase the mechanical strength of the threaded ends

• Improve the durability of threaded connections

• Prevent breakage or failure under load

• Extend the service life of tubing
