Tubing/Short Joint Thickening Process Overview:

The pipe-end upsetting (pier roughening) process involves heating the end of the tubing and feeding it into specialized thickening equipment. This causes plastic deformation at the pipe end, increasing both the wall thickness and the effective length of the thickened section, while keeping the inner diameter unchanged. The result is a stronger pipe end designed to improve thread connection performance.

The external upset process is a compound operation that combines upsetting, expanding, and extruding. Its main purpose is to:

Types of Pup Joints / Short Connectors:

1. Standard Pup Joint (Short Joint)

• NUE (Non-Upset End): Straight thread cut on both ends of the pipe without thickening.

• EUE (External Upset End): Pipe ends are upset (thickened) before threading to increase mechanical strength and torque capacity.

2. Double Male Pup Joint

• Features male threads on both ends

• Unlike standard joints, it does not include a coupling

• Commonly used in special connection scenarios for quick joint operations

3. Full-Length Thickened Pup Joint

• The entire short joint undergoes uniform upsetting

• Provides improved strength and sealing performance
